This week we’re talking all about a great DIY Montessori Toddler Activity: Cutting!
Cutting is an amazing fine motor activity that my Montessori Toddlers always enjoyed practicing during their Montessori Work Cycle. So let’s dive into some tips and benefits to this fun toddler activity!
Is It Safe for Toddlers?
Back when I used to offer tours at a Montessori School I worked at, one of the main questions I always used to get was whether or not cutting is a safe activity for toddlers.
And that is a completely understandable concern. I feel like when we consider Toddler type activities, we often think of puzzles, blocks, art, etc.
So when we offer activities like cutting, gluing, and sewing in the Montessori Toddler Environment, it makes sense that we would question that a bit.
That said, cutting as an activity can be completely safe for your Toddler! We just want to make sure we offer appropriately sized scissors, demonstrate how to safely use scissors, and sit with your Toddler while they initially practice.

Offering this DIY Montessori Cutting Activity
To offer this Montessori Cutting Activity, I recommend creating small strips of paper with purposeful lines that they can cut along. That way, they can practice in a progression from easiest to slightly harder depending on your observations (like the ones pictured above).
Let me know if you try this activity out with your Toddler & what you think! Cheers friend!
