5 Montessori Baby Spring Activities

Springtime is such a glorious time of year! Our sweet babies get to experience things like crisp morning air, singing birds, and fresh flowers!

And given that Montessori pedagogy fully embraces nature within the curriculum, you can imagine that there are some pretty cool Spring-themed Montessori Activities that we can offer our sweet babies & toddlers! So I have listed some examples for you to use and build off of below.

But first… here is one of my favorite Montessori quotes to keep in mind as you implement your Spring Montessori Activities with your baby.

“Let the children be free; encourage them, let them run outside when it’s raining; let them remove their shoes when they find a puddle of water; and when the grass of the meadows is wet with dew; let them run on it and trample it with their bare feet; let them rest peacefully when a tree invites them to sleep beneath it’s shade, let them shout and laugh when the sun wakes them in the morning.”

– Dr. Montessori

I feel like this quote fully embodies the beauties of depth of experiences that children can have as they explore the Spring atmosphere. And this is why so many of the Montessori lessons for babies relate to nature!

Here are 5 Montessori Baby Spring Activities that I love to do with my babies and toddlers and that I hope you enjoy as well!

1. Spring Themed Language Materials

What I love about Montessori language activities for babies is how simple and truly effective the lessons are. You can offer your baby language lessons like language cards, nomenclature objects, matching like items, and more!

You can also offer baskets of nomenclature objects! Examples of nomenclature figurines for spring could be spring baby animal figurines, flowers, various germinating materials, and whatever else you can think of!

    2. Care of Plants

Teaching our babies how to take care of growing plants is the perfect Springtime activity! You can teach them things like washing leaves, watering plants, germinating, and more!

And all those happen to be traditional Montessori lessons anyway! What better way to embrace the beauties of Spring than to truly model care of growing plants?!

    3. Basket of Known Objects

I always have a basket of known objects on my Montessori shelf. And the reason for this is it gives our babies a tactical exploration of materials they can find around the house! Plus it’s perfect for babies of any age!

So for a basket of known objects, you can collect any group of themed materials! Your Spring Basket could include cleaning brushes for a “Spring Cleaning” themed basket, like the one I have pictured below! This one that I made was a hit with my babies. ☺️

    4. Spring Baby Art, Music & Books

One of my absolute favorite Spring Montessori Baby Activities is art. I absolutely love baby hand print and foot print art, as they’re such a wonderful way to capture the growth of our babies! (Plus they’re so darn cute, no?)

You also likely know by now that baby language development is fiercely enhanced through singing and reading. And so for another Spring activity idea, switch out all your winter books and holiday songs for some spring themed books and music!

    5. Spring Themed Sorting + Transferring Materials

For a young toddler, or the walking baby as Dr. Montessori says, I absolutely love to offer themed sorting and transferring materials!

You can offer Spring themed sorting activities by offering various colored flowers, leaves, animals, etc. And babies love this because they get to explore the materials with their hands and sort them based on their senses.

Transferring work is also amazing to offer young toddlers! Transferring work can be offered by offering a tool, like tongs for example. Then you offer two containers of sorts and show the child how to use the tool to transfer the material from one container to the other.
